About this tool
Curious what a textbook 'ideal' weight is for your height? Enter your height and sex and this calculator applies four classic formulas — Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi — and shows the result of each, since they disagree slightly. Alongside them it gives the healthy weight range for your height based on a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9, which is often more useful as a target band. It works best for average-build adults. All four formulas are evaluated in your browser, so your details stay on your device.
Frequently asked questions
Where do these formulas come from?
They were created decades ago, mostly to help with medication dosing, and all share the same shape: a base weight at five feet of height plus a fixed amount for each inch above that. Devine is the best known; Robinson, Miller and Hamwi tweak the base and the per-inch figure. Because they were built on older population data, they give slightly different answers.
Why show a BMI range as well?
A single 'ideal' number can feel arbitrary, since healthy bodies of the same height vary a lot. The healthy weight range comes from a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 applied to your height, giving a band rather than one figure. For most people that band is a more realistic and forgiving target than any single formula value.
Is the ideal weight a target I must hit?
No. These formulas ignore muscle, frame size, age and body composition, so an athletic person may sit above their 'ideal' while being perfectly healthy. Use the numbers as a rough reference only, and discuss any real weight goal with a doctor or dietitian who can look at the whole picture. Everything is calculated in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to a server.
