About this tool

With this sales tax calculator you can add tax to a net price or strip it back out of a gross price at any rate you set, making it equally useful for shoppers and small businesses. Enter an amount, type the percentage and choose whether the figure already includes tax, and it shows the net price, the tax portion and the gross total side by side. It works for sales tax, VAT or GST anywhere. All of it runs in your browser, so your numbers stay private.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between net and gross?

Net is the price before tax and gross is the price after tax is included. To add tax, multiply the net by (1 + rate), so 100 at 10 percent becomes 110. To remove it, divide the gross by (1 + rate): 110 at 10 percent gives a net of 100 and 10 of tax. Reversing the calculation this way is handy when a displayed price already includes VAT.

Which tax rate should I use?

That depends entirely on your location and the type of goods, since rates differ by country, state or province and some items are reduced-rate or exempt. The tool applies whatever percentage you enter, but it cannot know your local rules. Treat the result as a general estimate for information, not financial or tax advice, and rely on your tax authority or accountant for anything you file.

Are my figures sent to a server?

No. The calculation is plain arithmetic performed in your browser, so the amounts and rates you enter are never uploaded or stored anywhere. That makes it safe to use with real invoice or pricing figures, and nothing you type is logged or shared, even when you run many calculations in a row.
