How is ROI calculated?

Return on investment is the net profit divided by the initial amount, shown as a percentage: ROI = (final value − initial amount) ÷ initial amount × 100. So an investment that grows from 1,000 to 1,250 has a net profit of 250 and an ROI of 25 percent. A negative result simply means the final value came in below what you put in — that is, a loss.

What does annualized return mean?

Annualized return restates your total ROI as an equivalent steady rate per year, so a long, slow gain and a quick one can be compared fairly. It uses compounding: annualized = (final ÷ initial)^(1 ÷ years) − 1. A 25 percent total return over five years is only about 4.6 percent a year, while the same 25 percent in one year is 25 percent annualized. Add the holding period to see this figure; without it, only the plain total ROI is shown.

Does ROI count fees, taxes or inflation?

Only if you build them into the numbers you enter. Basic ROI compares two values and ignores trading fees, taxes on gains and the effect of inflation, all of which reduce what you actually keep. For a truer picture, subtract costs and taxes from the final value before entering it. Treat the result as an educational estimate for comparison, not financial advice, and your figures stay in your browser and are never uploaded.
