Why are Nether coordinates divided by 8, and how do portals decide where to link?
The Nether is a compressed copy of the world: one block of horizontal travel there equals eight in the Overworld, which is what makes Nether highways so fast. When you step through a portal, the game converts your X and Z by that factor of 8 (Y is not scaled) and looks for an existing portal near the converted point. If it finds one within its search range, you come out there; if not, it builds a new portal close to that spot. Placing portals at manually converted coordinates is how you keep pairs linked cleanly.
Why does my portal come out somewhere unexpected, or create a new portal?
Portals do not link to exact points — they link to the nearest portal within a search area around the converted coordinates, roughly 128 blocks wide in the Overworld and 16 in the Nether (the same distance after scaling). If another portal sits closer to the converted spot than yours does, the game picks that one instead; if none is in range, it spawns a fresh portal. The fix is to build both portals at properly converted coordinates and keep large vertical offsets in mind, since the search also spans the full height.
Are my coordinates uploaded, and does the converter work for Bedrock and Java?
