The level meter does not move when I speak — what should I check?
First confirm the permission: click the padlock icon in the address bar, set the microphone to Allow and reload the page. Next make sure the right input is selected, both in this tool and in your operating system's sound settings — laptops often default to the internal mic instead of your headset. Check the hardware mute switch found on many headsets, raise the input volume in the OS, and close any app that might be holding the microphone exclusively.
Is my audio recorded or sent to a server?
No. The tool uses the Web Audio API to analyse the stream in real time inside your browser: it measures the level, draws the waveform, and then the samples are discarded. Nothing is recorded, nothing is stored, and no audio ever leaves your device. As soon as you stop the test or close the tab, the browser releases the microphone completely.
What does the sample rate mean, and which value is normal?
The sample rate is how many times per second the audio signal is measured. Most systems run at 44,100 or 48,000 Hz, and either is more than enough for voice — calling apps compress audio far below that anyway. A different value is not a problem, and it has nothing to do with a quiet signal: if you sound faint, raise the input gain or move closer to the mic rather than worrying about the sample rate.
