Genkōyōshi Page Counter — Characters to 400-Square Manuscript Pages
Paste Japanese text to count characters and convert them into 400- or 200-square genkōyōshi manuscript pages, with a line-aware estimate that counts line breaks like real manuscript paper.

Line-aware: on real genkōyōshi a line break jumps to the next row, so each paragraph consumes whole 20-square rows (400-sq sheet = 20×20, 200-sq = 20×10). This is how teachers usually count.
Counts run entirely in your browser. The pure estimate divides the character count by 400 (or 200); the line-aware estimate reserves whole rows per line like real manuscript paper. Click a value to copy.
About this tool
This genkōyōshi counter converts your text into Japanese manuscript-paper pages: paste or type, and it reports the character count plus how many standard 400-square sheets (and 200-square sheets) the text fills. It offers two estimates — a simple characters-÷-400 figure, and a line-aware one that mimics real manuscript paper, where every line break jumps to the next row of squares. Options control whether spaces and newlines are counted. Ideal for school essays, contest submissions with page limits, and translation or writing jobs quoted per sheet. Everything is counted locally in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
Why are the two page estimates different?
The simple estimate just divides total characters by 400, as if the text flowed with no breaks. The line-aware estimate mimics real genkōyōshi: a sheet is 20 columns × 20 rows, and every line break abandons the rest of its row and starts a new one, so paragraph-heavy text consumes more sheets. Dialogue-rich fiction can easily need 1.5× the simple figure. If your submission is judged on actual sheets, trust the line-aware number.
Should spaces and newlines be counted?
It depends on the rules you are writing under, which is why both are toggles here. Japanese contest and school guidelines usually mean visible characters when they say 800字以内, but a requirement stated in manuscript-paper sheets implicitly counts layout — indents and blank squares included. Word-processor counts (like Word's) typically exclude newlines. When a prize or grade depends on it, check the organiser's counting rule and set the toggles to match.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser with JavaScript — your manuscript is never sent to a server, stored or logged. That matters for unpublished work: novels, contest entries and client documents stay on your device. The tool also keeps working offline once the page has loaded, so you can keep checking counts while writing anywhere.
