What is the difference between PS and hp?
PS (from the German Pferdestärke) is metric horsepower: the power needed to raise 75 kg by one metre in one second, exactly 735.49875 watts. The hp used in the US and UK is mechanical, or imperial, horsepower at about 745.7 watts. That makes 1 PS ≈ 0.9863 hp, so an engine quoted at 200 PS delivers roughly 197 hp. The gap is only about 1.4%, but it matters when comparing brochures, because Japanese and European makers traditionally quote PS while American sources use hp.
Where do kW fit in, and how do the torque units relate?
The kilowatt is the SI unit and the legally preferred way to state engine power in the EU, Japan and many other markets — 1 kW equals about 1.3596 PS or 1.3410 hp, so a 100 kW motor is 136 PS or 134 hp. For torque, 1 kgf·m — the unit in older Japanese catalogues — is exactly 9.80665 N·m, and 1 lb-ft, standard in American sources, is about 1.3558 N·m. Electric-car outputs are almost always given in kW, which makes this conversion increasingly common.
Are the conversions exact, and does anything I type leave my browser?
The unit conversions themselves are mathematically exact, based on the defined factors for each unit. What can legitimately differ is the measurement behind the number: an engine rated under SAE net, DIN or the Japanese JIS standard may show slightly different figures for the same hardware, because each standard tests with different accessories attached.
