Frequently asked questions
How are the equinox holidays determined?
They follow the actual astronomical equinoxes, so the date varies between 20–21 March and 22–23 September. Officially, Japan's National Astronomical Observatory announces each year's dates in the government gazette the preceding February. This tool uses the standard astronomical approximation formula, which matches the official dates for the supported years — but for dates decades ahead, only the official announcement is definitive.
What are substitute holidays and the citizens' holiday?
If a national holiday falls on a Sunday, the next weekday that is not itself a holiday becomes a substitute holiday (furikae kyūjitsu) — that is why some Mondays in May turn out to be days off. Separately, any ordinary day sandwiched between two holidays becomes a "citizens' holiday" (kokumin no kyūjitsu); in practice this appears in September in some years, creating the long Silver Week weekend. The tool applies both rules automatically.
Is the list computed locally? Can laws change it?
Yes — the statutory rules are built into the page and everything is computed by JavaScript in your browser; nothing is fetched or sent. One caveat: holiday law does occasionally change (the 2020–2021 Olympic years moved several holidays, which this tool accounts for), so for years far in the future a new amendment could alter dates. For 2020–2030 the list reflects the rules as legislated today.
