About this tool
This converter switches a data size between bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB and more, in both SI units (1 KB = 1000 bytes) and IEC units (1 KiB = 1024 bytes). Enter a value once and see every unit at the same time, which clears up the common confusion between the two systems β for example why a 1 TB drive shows less space in your operating system. It runs entirely in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between SI and IEC units?
SI units use powers of 1000, so 1 KB is 1000 bytes and 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes β the convention storage makers use. IEC units use powers of 1024 and are written KiB, MiB and GiB; this is what operating systems typically count, which is why reported sizes can differ.
Does it convert bits as well as bytes?
It works in bytes and their multiples, which is how files and storage are measured. Network speeds are often quoted in bits (with a lowercase b, as in Mbps); remember that one byte is eight bits if you need to compare the two.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. All conversion happens in your browser, so the values you enter are never sent anywhere.
