About this tool
This checker calculates the WCAG contrast ratio between a text color and its background, and tells you whether the pair passes AA and AAA for normal and large text. Adjust either color and the ratio and pass/fail badges update live, so you can reach accessible, readable combinations quickly. It runs entirely in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
What contrast ratio do I need to pass WCAG?
WCAG AA asks for a ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text, while AAA wants 7:1 and 4.5:1. Large text means roughly 18pt, or 14pt when bold. Higher ratios are easier to read for everyone, especially in bright light or with low vision.
Does passing AA make my design fully accessible?
Contrast is one important piece, but not the whole picture. Passing AA means your text is legible against its background; full accessibility also depends on font size, focus states, keyboard use, alt text and more, so treat this as a quick, reliable contrast check.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. The contrast is calculated in your browser, so the colors you test are never sent anywhere.
